The Best Things to Do in New York City: 1001 Ideas

by: Caitlin Leffel, Jacob Lehman
I gave this book as a gift - Christmas of 2009 - to my friend's daughter.

She could not stop reading it!!! She is in her mid-twenties - a professional - and socially active. She has been in the City for three years.

After an hour went by - it seemed she had been to about 25% of the book's suggestions --- which I found quite amazing. I kept pressing her for recommendations she disagreed with and she never came up with one. All I heard was "I have to try this".

There is little more than I can pass on to others beyond the fact that this book has passed the purview of a young, hard core, socially active New Yorker.

Not for Tourists 2010 Guide to New York City (Not for Tourists Guidebook)

by: Nft
I like the concept of a "tourbook for residents" and this book might carry that off well, but only if you can read it! These books come in two page sizes and unfortunately this one is in the smaller size, which may be small enough to fit in a purse but cannot be read without a magnifier. If it were in the same larger page size as the Atlanta and Seattle books (which are still small enough to fit in a glovebox) I would have given it higher marks. Also, be aware that this is fundamentally a Manhattan guide only; other coverage includes only Hoboken and Jersey City to the west, and the communities bordering the East River, from Astoria to Red Hook and Park Slope, to the east.
